The correspondent of the newspaper "Akher Khabar" threatened with death
Maher Ghidhaoui, correspondent at the private weekly newspaper "Akher Khabar" in Bouhajla, governorate of Kairouan has been threatened with death by a stranger on Sunday, September 22nd. Ghdhaoui said to Tunis Observatory for Freedom of the Press, that "an anonymous contacted him by phone on Sunday, around 13h and ended his communication with a death threat in these terms:" if you stick to your ideas, you'll see what will happen to you. "Ghidhaoui thinks that this threat made through a public telephone from the region, is related to an investigation he is working on since a while. The journalist from Akher Khabar is often intimidated and threatened because of his articles. The last incident was in August 22nd, when the Mayor has expressly harassed him, following an article published in the newspaper, recounting the events organized by the inhabitants of the region following the closure of a garbage dump.
It is not excluded that the fact that he is a journalist in a newspaper that investigates on terrorism cases, political and administrative corruption and which journalists are subject to many threats, strongly makes him a target.
The Tunis Centre for Freedom of the Press expresses its solidarity with Ghidhaoui and calls the security authorities to give maximum importance to this case and to drop the mask of the menacing person and to assure the protection of our colleague.
